Evidence for the transmission of Plasmodium vivax in the Republic of the Congo, West Central Africa.

چکیده
Plasmodium vivax is not thought to be transmitted in western and central Africa, because of the very high prevalence of the red blood cell Duffy-negative phenotype in local populations, a condition which is thought to confer complete resistance against blood infection with P. vivax. There are, however, persistent reports of travelers returning from this region with P. vivax infections. To investigate whether transmission occurs in this region, the presence of antibodies specific to P. vivax preerythrocytic-stage antigens was assessed in individuals from the Republic of the Congo. A total of 55 (13%) of 409 samples tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay had antibodies to P. vivax-specific antigens.

Molecular Evidence on Changing Pattern of Mixed Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax Infections during Year-Round Transmission of Malaria in Chahbahar, Iran
Mixed malaria infections, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, are suspected to occur at a greater frequency than is detected by conventional light microscopy. In order to determine the year round pattern of transmission and the frequency of mixed infections in malaria endemic area, we carried out a prospective comparison of diagnosis by conventional light microscopy and nested PCR in Chahbahar ...
متن کاملTransmission of Plasmodium vivax in South-Western Uganda: Report of Three Cases in Pregnant Women
Plasmodium vivax is considered to be rare in the predominantly Duffy negative populations of Sub-Saharan Africa, as this red blood cell surface antigen is essential for invasion by the parasite. However, despite only very few reports of molecularly confirmed P. vivax from tropical Africa, serological evidence indicated that 13% of the persons sampled in Congo had been exposed to P. vivax. We id...
متن کاملThe International Limits and Population at Risk of Plasmodium vivax Transmission in 2009
BACKGROUND A research priority for Plasmodium vivax malaria is to improve our understanding of the spatial distribution of risk and its relationship with the burden of P. vivax disease in human populations. The aim of the research outlined in this article is to provide a contemporary evidence-based map of the global spatial extent of P. vivax malaria, together with estimates of the human popula...
متن کاملThe Plasmodium vivax in China: decreased in local cases but increased imported cases from Southeast Asia and Africa
Currently the local P. vivax was sharply decreased while the imported vivax malaria increased in China. Despite Southeast Asia was still the main import source of vivax malaria, the trend of Africa become serious, especially for west and central Africa. Herein we have clarified the trend of P. vivax in China from 2004-2012, and made some analysis for the differences of imported vivax back from ...

Background and Purpose: Islamic Republic of Iran has greatly reduced its malaria burden and has a national goal to eliminate malaria by 2025. The aim of this study was to determine the population dynamics of Anopheles maculipennis sensu lato, in relation to probable malaria transmission. For this purpose, the study was conducted in three villages in Isfahan Province of Iran, from April to March...
